Abstract

Mathematics is a basic requirement for obtaining admission into higher institutions in the pure and applied sciences, engineering, and medicine. It is also the most basic requirement for the attainment of technological self-reliance by any people. But the enrolment of the subject by students in Nigerian teacher education program has been incredibly low over the years. This has consequently affected the quality of teaching and the professionalization of mathematics teaching. The major causes of this low enrolment in mathematics teacher education and the strategies for teacher’s professionalization was considered. Recommendations arising from the discourse were proffered.
